K-Pop: Holiday K-Pop News

Hi! It’s Annie!

Now that we’ve got through some of our planned reviews, I felt that we should really talk about what’s been happening in the K-Pop world. I know that it’s Taehyung’s birthday today or tomorrow depending on where you live, but my sister is going to cover his birthday since he’s her bias wrecker. So this post is just going to be general news. All of it is important and some of it has been (or might be) changing plans within the industry. But mostly I want all of us to remember to support our groups no matter what happens and hope that they all stay safe. There’s a lot up in the air again and that’s always difficult to navigate. I’ll also put some good news in here so don’t expect a depressing post either! I swear all of this will be mostly hopeful! Anyways, I’m just going to jump right into it.

Yoongi, Namjoon, and Jin:

I think pretty much everyone and their mother knows this by now, but three members of BTS have tested positive for Covid. Yoongi was the first to test positive when tested immediately after returning from the states to begin his quarantine in South Korea. We heard pretty early on that he was asymptomatic, and we heard a friend of his confirm that he was actually feeling fine not long after. He’s been experiencing light cold symptoms, but not much else. Yesterday he confirmed that he’s not feeling bad at all due to his vaccination. This is why we all need to get vaccinated, folks! Not long after we received another statement saying that both Jin and Namjoon had tested positive. Namjoon was tested again after his quarantine, so it came as a shock to him and everyone else because he had felt completely fine throughout his quarantine. He also confirmed that he’s still feeling completely fine. Jin was already out of his quarantine, meaning he probably contracted his case in South Korea, unlike the other two who probably contracted their cases in the states or traveling. He submitted himself for testing because he was starting to feel flu-like symptoms. We haven’t heard from him yet, but his symptoms also seem to be light, though worse than the others. I know this news freaked out a lot of ARMY, but I want to be as much comfort as I can in this situation. This situation is actually very hopeful. All of them have light symptoms or are not having any symptoms at all, which is a very good sign! They are also all vaccinated, and making sure you feel light symptoms instead of something worse is one of the purposes of the vaccine. They are all young and healthy and I’m sure that they will all feel fine and test negative in no time. It’s ok to worry about them, but it does nothing to worry too much. Especially because it seems like there’s very little to worry about in this situation. Let’s all try to stay positive for their sakes and all of our sakes!

Tour Questions:

Another piece of this is people wondering what this will mean for other groups and planned world tours. As many people know, many K-Pop groups have already scheduled tour dates in 2022. It even seems like BTS might be doing a world tour in 2022, though they haven’t announced one yet. Many people are worried that this will mean the cancellation of tours. I have several thoughts about this worry. First, this probably shouldn’t be much of a conversation right now. If you are worrying about the health of the idols, that’s completely fine. But worrying that this will mean you won’t be able to see them in concert is a little misguided. We really need to focus on making sure our boys are healthy first, and that should always be the first priority. Personally, I don’t believe any group will cancel their tours unless their groups get Covid on the tour. Especially because all the member of BTS contracted Covid over two weeks after the concert, meaning that the concert itself was not a super-spreader event. Which I love, I’m glad that the venue and all of ARMY was so responsible! However, the idea that these idols will probably have to get sick for their companies to cancel is not a great thought. I definitely worry about groups traveling around right now. I really don’t know what to think, but I do know if concerts do get cancelled, I will support the decision because a decision like that will always mean that the company is taking the health of their artists seriously. Also, if you are currently worried about the state of the BTS concert in Seoul, and you do not live in South Korea, please stop. Right now. You are not going to South Korea to see the boys, just wait until their tour. I know that’s easy to say coming from someone who saw them in LA, but I live in California and US travel restrictions are looser. And traveling is dangerous for you and for the people in South Korea. Right now it looks like you won’t be able to go over there at all, so don’t plan on it. That concert is only meant for locals and we aren’t about to ruin it for anyone.

ATEEZ Extension:

Most ATEEZ fans will already know that due to high demand they added a day in Los Angeles. This addition did mean that my sister and I snagged tickets and we are actually going to make it to the ATEEZ concert! I’m so excited! I’m a little worried for the boys, but I hope that they do whatever they can to stay safe during their travel and if the tour gets postponed again I’ll completely understand. I hope everything gets better though and we’ll all be able to see them pretty soon here! Anyways, it’s really nice to see our boys selling out venues so quickly and having such a demand that they could add days. I think the day we tried for tickets, they all sold out in about thirty minutes. My friend actually was the successful one who got them so I’m grateful for her! By the time I got in there were only a couple of separated seats left. I hope all you Atiny out there were successful in getting the tickets and I hope I see all of you there!

Namjoon and Hoseok:

On a more lighthearted note, I wanted to talk about Instagram and BTS again, because what happened yesterday made me laugh and then struggle for breath. Namjoon has been posting pictures of him Namjooning pretty often on his Instagram, which is one of my favorite things ever. Namjoon posted the final few pictures from his most recent vacation and then said that this was all he had left. No more pictures. Until Hobi commented back that he had pictures of Namjoon and posted what can only be called a thirst trap that sent the internet into a frenzy. I’m sure Hobi was cackling madly. More importantly, the interaction reminded me that the boys are still in contact even with various members quarantining and that just warmed my heart. I love their accounts on Instagram for so many reasons, and this is definitely one of my favorites. Through this and Tae’s birthday we also received the information that Hobi has folders of pictures of the rest of the boys. This information is also absolute gold.

Bias Change:

And this is a note that’s mostly just about me, but I wanted to note that since the concert I’ve had a bias change that if you’ve kept up with my BTS posts, you might have detected. Jimin and Namjoon are still my boys, but it seems that they’ve switched places and now Namjoon is my bias. I know people say to expect a change to your bias list after you’ve gone to a concert, but I was not expecting to be wrecked that hard! Namjoon was just so comforting and I find myself continuously going back to that feeling. I would love to hear from anyone else who’s bias line might have changed after the concert or really any concert! Loving all the boys so much really means you never know when one of them is just going to completely wreck you out of nowhere. Though I guess this wasn’t out of nowhere considering he was already my bias wrecker. I’m sorry this isn’t exactly general K-Pop news, but I just thought I would note the change! Thank you for bearing with me through that!

I tried to keep more of a positive tone through all of this, even though some of the news wasn’t exactly the best. But I think that all of the news is hopeful, even if some of it isn’t necessarily good. And I think keeping positive is also what’s going to help all of our favorite groups the most through the bad news. It’s completely understandable if you’re worried or saddened by some of this, but try and stay hopeful if nothing else. I think ARMY has proved that they are strong and continue to be strong through any obstacle, and many other group fandoms are the same way. Let’s all get through this together!

See you across the pond!

Sincerely, Annie

Disney: ‘Encanto’ Review

Screenshot of Mirabel from ‘Encanto’ now on Disney+. Copyright goes to Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Hey! Hallie here!

‘Encanto’s finally on Disney+! Everyone’s been talking about ‘Encanto’ ever since it hit the streaming platform, as they should, so I figured now would be a great time to get into some spoilers and write a review! There are pros and cons I found in this movie, but if you haven’t seen it, know that ‘Encanto’ is absolutely delightful while still delivering some very powerful and effective messages. In other words, go watch this right now! It’s worth it and there’s no added cost to watch it on Disney+! If you’re still here I hope you’ve seen the movie because there will be SPOILERS ahead.

What I Liked:

The Characters: This movie has a large cast of fun, colorful characters. There are two standouts in particular, however. Mirabel is our powerless main character, making it easy for the audience to sympathize with her. Even beyond considering society’s obsession with superpowers, who hasn’t felt like their accomplishments are inadequate compared to others? But Mirabel is incredibly loving and high-spirited, and of course, just because she doesn’t have powers doesn’t mean she isn’t important. She proves her worth by fighting against inter-generational trauma and inspiring others to be mindful of their own wants and desires despite the pressure placed on them. I also loved that this movie didn’t decide to give her some random hidden powers by the end. It set out to prove that Mirabel was special even without powers, and I’m pleased to see it didn’t backtrack on its major message like movies such as ‘Frozen 2’ did. The other stand out of this movie is Bruno. Bruno is painted by the family as a devious figure who brings misfortune wherever he goes, but the more you listen to the lyrics of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, the more you realize he didn’t do anything wrong. Bruno has the gift of telling the future, but whenever he foretold something unfortunate, he was wrongfully blamed for said unfortunate event. When we finally get to meet Bruno in the film, it’s revealed that he never could bring himself to leave his family and his home despite the lonesomeness it brought. It’s hard not to feel devastated once it’s shown that he sits near a wall looking out towards the dining room and has set out his own table and plate so he can eat alongside his family. It’s also revealed that Bruno hid mainly because he saw Mirabel in the midst of potential disaster and didn’t want that information to taint the family’s opinion of Mirabel in the way it had tainted their opinion of him. Bruno’s life is a very sad one, but he’s hilarious and chipper, often resembling a giant puppy. These characters are the glue of the film and easy to fall in love with.

Music: Lin-Manuel Miranda is behind the music for this film and you can definitely hear it. Which isn’t a bad thing! Unlike ‘Moana’, where Lin came into the process later and worked with other artists, Lin was given more creative control here. He took a lot of inspiration from Columbian culture and music, making the soundtrack feel more authentic. But he also added a few twists of his own, like letting Bruno and Dolores rap, as well as adding fun, modern beats that we don’t usually hear in Disney musicals. My favorite songs here were “Surface Pressure” and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. “Surface Pressure” is a song sung by Luisa about the pressure she’s put under because she’s one of the older grandchildren in the family and possesses super strength. The song does an excellent job of relating the emotional exhaustion that comes with carrying too many familial burdens, but also the dread of feeling like you’re worthless when you aren’t taking care of said burdens. This song has a more modern sound that makes it unique and addictive. I could seriously listen to it all day. Speaking of, let’s talk about “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. I can’t stop listening to this one. Each piece each of the family contributes to this song has a slightly different sound to match the story they’re telling. Felix and Pepa give the song it’s main, traditional-sounding melody with the story of their unfortunate wedding in a hurricane. Meanwhile, Dolores hints she knows more than she’s saying with her whispering rap and Camilo teases Mirabel with a playful but haunting verse about how monstrous Bruno is. It’s all really fun, and the way it comes together at the end is so satisfying that hearing it makes me want to return immediately to the film. This soundtrack is no joke.

Representation: I really can’t speak too much on this because I’m a white person, but can we all just agree that seeing so many different people represented on screen felt good? After all the conversations we’ve had about Marvel and Afro-Latine representation, it was so nice to see this movie give us all kinds of Latine individuals, including Afro-Latine characters, without batting an eye. Can we do more of this in the future please?

What I Disliked:

Beginning and Ending: The opening and closing songs of this movie fell flat for me. The opening song gives us a quick introduction to the family, which is necessary. But it also doesn’t seem to know how to fit in all this exposition into the actual story. What results is the only fourth-wall breaking song in the film, where the movie tries to make it seem like Mirabel is talking about her family to a group of children while it’s pretty obvious that she’s explaining all of this information to the audience. I mean, she looks directly at the camera and travels around her house without any of these kids actually with her. It’s all a bit too in-your-face and it made me wish that we had been introduced to the family in a cleaner manner. Especially because all of the information is a lot to pack into just one song. Something similar happens at the end of the film, but even more extreme. After Mirabel and Abuela return to the destroyed house and Bruno is revealed to the rest of the family, we get one final song that attempts to wrap up literally everything in the story. Bruno’s actual intentions, the rebuilding of the house, Dolores’ new relationship, everyone embracing their powers, and Mirabel’s newfound place in her family. It’s too much told too fast, and it winds up feeling a bit sloppy. I really think they needed to space out the information they gave us in both the beginning and the ending.

The Characters: I do like the characters and I did gush about both Mirabel and Bruno, but let’s be honest, this movie has the ‘Big Hero 6’ problem. That is, it has too many characters and not nearly enough time to explore them. I loved Luisa’s song. But after her song she begins to lose her super strength and she winds up crying off-camera for most of the remainder of the movie. My favorite part of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was Camilo’s verse. Can I tell you anything about Camilo aside from that he’s a trouble-maker? Nope. I heard this movie is possibly getting a television series somewhere down the line and I really think it needs it. Especially for characters like Abuela, who the movie attempts to redeem but never fully has take accountability for not only the way she treated those with powers, but the way she treated Mirabel despite not having any superpowers to speak of either. Many audience members walked away from the movie without truly feeling she earned the forgiveness she was given, and I think part of that is due to how fast the movie wrapped itself up without being able to fully explore each character. I hope a series will give them more time to do what they couldn’t accomplish here.

And that’s it! ‘Encanto’ isn’t perfect, but it’s still a great film that’s worth watching. I’d watch it again, though I feel we need more content before I can be fully satisfied with the story. But what’s wrong with more ‘Encanto’ content? I certainly wouldn’t complain. If you’ve made it this far I genuinely hope you’ve seen ‘Encanto’, but if you haven’t, be sure to watch it on Disney+! I highly recommend it!

Don’t do anything fun until I get back!

Marvel: ‘Hawkeye’ Episode 5 and Finale

Screenshot of (left) Florence Pugh and (right) Hailee Steinfeld as Yelena and Kate in ‘Hawkeye’. Copyright goes to Marvel Entertainment and Disney +.

Hi! It’s Annie!

Merry Christmas everyone! Definitely my favorite holiday content this year was the ‘Hawkeye’ series. I already miss it even though it just ended a few days ago. This was one of my favorite things I’ve seen from Marvel in a while! I loved the lighthearted and personal nature of it and all of the characters were amazing. I would absolutely love if they decided to do a season two. And this is one of those shows where the ending was just as good as the rest of it. I have quite a bit to cover from the last couple of episodes, so I’m just going to get into it! I’ll go through each episode and then do an overall thoughts section at the end, but just know that I highly recommend this. Go and watch it if you haven’t already! And I’m not going to say any negatives because I really can’t think of any. As always, MAJOR SPOILERS ahead!!!

Episode 5:

Clint Barton: In the last episode we saw Clint kind of lose it and send Kate away. In this episode it really occurs to him that he needs Kate. Not only does he feel pretty lonely on his own, Kate reasserts herself and saves his ass. But more than that, we saw Clint fully embrace the fact that he was the Ronin. He puts on the full suit and everything to try and tell Maya that the real person behind her father’s death was actually her uncle. Seeing Clint finally put on the suit so that he could possibly help Maya was a great moment. But really, this episode was more about Kate. Though the moment where Clint goes to the Avengers memorial plaque to talk to Natasha absolutely made everyone tear up.

Kate Bishop: This was the actual episode where Kate decided her future. Even after seeing how difficult everything was going to be and how much the job has affected Clint. Though she is initially pretty brought down by Clint’s outburst, she knows that he still needs her. And after an amazingly hilarious conversation with Yelena, Kate goes after Clint. And then proves her marksmanship yet again. But though this was an episode that included Kate’s resolution to do what Clint does, the highlight was the beginning of her friendship with Yelena. And this has to be one of the things that most excited me about this entire series. Kate and Yelena work beautifully off of each other and are hilarious together. Kate’s nervous politeness and sarcasm contrasted with Yelena’s morbid positivity and hilarity was perfect. I just want to see more of it!

Yelena Belova: So we finally figured out what happed to Yelena after all these years. Yelena was one of the victims of the blip, right in the middle of her attempting to un-brainwash all the Black Widows after the events of ‘Black Widow’. Continuing the work of her sister. And once Yelena is blipped back into existence, she immediately goes to tell her sister that she’s fine. Only to find out that Natasha is gone. This is immediately heartbreaking and it follows why she would want to kill Clint. She blames him for Natasha’s death. But we find out that this isn’t the only reason she wants Clint dead. While Yelena is hilariously paying Kate a visit, complete with Mac n Cheese and complaints about her cutlery, she heavily implies that she’s been hired. And towards the end of the episode we can tell that she’s taken a liking to Kate because she sends Kate a picture of who hired her. Yelena’s backstory in this episode was needed and heartbreaking.

Echo: Maya finally finds out the truth this episode from Clint himself. And we can already tell that she can’t help but kind of believe him. Even though she really doesn’t want to.

Eleanor Bishop: She arrested her fiancee to cover up her tracks only for us to find out that she was the one who hired Yelena. And she works for Kingpin. I didn’t mean to call her villainy this perfectly, but man I was not expecting Kingpin.

Episode 6:

Kate Bishop: This was one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. But one of the things it really was, was the beginning of a coming of age story for Kate. This episode is where Kate’s heroism begins. Not only does Kate take point on infiltrating her own mother’s Christmas party, she also makes some really important decisions that illustrate to her just how difficult the job is going to be. In finding out that her mother’s life is in danger, Kate, Clint, and the LARPers try and protect her. From being killed at least. Throughout this episode we see Kate teaming up with Clint in one of my favorite action sequences in all of Marvel, fight Yelena and declare that she just can’t help but like Yelena, and eventually even take on Kingpin. And at the end of it, she puts her Mom in jail for her crimes. Clint asks Kate if she’s ready to do the right thing at the beginning of the episode, and here we see that Kate is most definitely ready. Even if it’s difficult. I almost cried when Clint took Kate and Lucky home for Christmas to his family at the end. And I can’t wait to see Kate going forward. She’s lovely and hilarious and Hailee Steinfeld really made her so lovable. And if the ending where Clint rejected the name Lady Hawk at the end tells us anything, she’s also our new Hawkeye.

Clint Barton: Delivered one of my favorite lines in the entire finale. Yelling “No shit” when someone told him his aim was good. Also being incredibly confused by Kate throughout the episode and getting stuck in, and eventually knocking down, the Rockefeller tree was a highlight. (Let’s give it up for the adorable owl who also stole some tracksuits at the end. Thank you Pym!) Clint was a comedic and warm presence in the finale, and once again demonstrated that he’s still that one Dad that adopts all of the kids in need. He fully explained what happened with Natasha to Yelena in a very touching moment. And then of course brought his new child and dog home to the rest of his family at the end. Everyone needs a Clint Barton in their life.

Yelena Belova: She was a scene stealer while fighting Kate. Even complimenting Kate on some of her tactics and also being very annoyed when Kate pressed all the buttons in the elevator. I just want to see more of this duo. And to see her finally come to terms with what happened to Natasha was very emotional. To hear Clint and know her sister well enough to know that his version of her was the truth. The way Clint looked almost happy to see her despite the fact that she was trying to kill him was also heart wrenching. Yelena is so hilarious but also a character with a lot of emotional depth that I love.

Echo: So we know that she’s getting her own spin off, and this finale took every moment to remind us of it. Echo kills who has been her best friend up until this point after pleading with him to join her. She does it completely out of self defense, but you can see that it breaks her. And then she seemingly kills Kingpin at the end, but I don’t really believe it. We didn’t really get to see him die. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of him in the spinoff. And we certainly can’t leave Maya this emotionally vulnerable. Come on now.

The LARPers: Hilarious. And they are all firefighters and cops, so their help in the giant culminating fight is needed. I also love how people don’t listen to them until they’re dressed as their LARP characters. I love how much love this show treated these characters with.

Jack: He took out his sword and just started hilariously helping Clint and Kate at the end. He started out as creepy but ended the series being downright precious. He was so happy and suave kicking ass and his biggest concern is getting blood on his tie. I didn’t think the series could make me like him, but they somehow managed it.

Eleanor Bishop: Tries to convince Kate at the end that she committed all those crimes for her and that it was needed. Then guilt trips Kate for wanting to put her behind bars. Definitely a gaslighter if you ask me. I know I’ve already said this a thousand times, but I was so happy that this allowed Kate to go with Clint for Christmas.

Laura Barton: We do get a confirmation at the end here that the Rolex belonged to Laura, which I was hoping for! I was so excited when we saw the ’19’ under the SHIELD symbol. Laura Barton is Mockingbird! I freaking loved this reveal!

Rogers the Musical: I really didn’t need to see the full version. And since when are Broadway costumes that bad? They were all wearing T-shirts and hoodies. But so many Broadway people were involved with this and they all did an excellent job! I just couldn’t help but cringe through all of it.

Final Thoughts:

I just want a season two starring Kate and Yelena. Is that too much to ask? I feel like the rest of Marvel right now is going absolutely insane with the multiverse storylines. Which, being honest here, the idea of this really isn’t my favorite. The multiverse can allow absolutely anything to happen, and that’s a killer for any concise storyline. This is an easy way for Marvel to call anything ‘not canon’ because it happened in a different universe. Not that they were not doing this before. ( See ‘Agents of SHIELD’ and ‘Agent Carter’. I only like the latter though, not so much the former.) But I’m not sure how much of the chaos I can take on a bigger scale. I much prefer more personal stories like this one, so I have a feeling these are the kinds of Marvel content I will be clinging to going forward. Especially with everything going on, having a lighthearted show is everything that I want right now out of content that I watch. Having a lower stakes and more personal Kate and Yelena show with hints of Clint would make me so happy. I know a lot of people were expecting them to kill off Clint at the end of this, and I’m so glad that they remained consistent with the tone and didn’t do that. It focused more on character development and making all the characters lovable and it more than succeeded at that. This is now one of my comfort content watches. I can already tell. And they better just retire Clint and never kill him off! He and Kate are partners now, and he’s also basically her adopted father at this point. I wouldn’t be able to take it.

Seriously, if you haven’t already, just go over to your Disney + account and watch this. I went into this not thinking I was going to like it much and seriously fell in love with every aspect of it. I love this show with all my heart and I will be rewatching this over the next couple months. And I will now be consuming all content featuring Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. I regret nothing. I hope you all have an amazing Christmas just like how I’m sure Clint and Kate’s was!

See you across the pond!

Sincerely, Annie

Marvel: Ranking the Phase 4 Disney+ Shows

Screenshot of Paul Bettany as Vision and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff in ‘WandaVision’. Copyright goes to Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios.

Hey! Hallie here!

Ever since the last ‘Hawkeye’ episode aired, which my sister will be reviewing in her next post, Twitter has been highly debating the proper ranking of each of Marvel’s Disney+ shows so far. Some of this conversation is getting kind of heated, so here’s your reminder that this is just my opinion! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on each Marvel show and there’s no correct ranking of these shows! I have some strong opinions I’ll share here, but so do many others and I don’t think anyone’s strong opinions cancel out anyone else’s. In other words, I’m just going to have fun with this because I’m a huge Marvel fan, and I hope you guys have fun with it too! Also, there will likely be some SPOILERS ahead!

5. ‘What If?’. Unlike a lot of people who have been putting ‘What If?’ last on their list, I did actually watch this show in it’s entirety! It also wasn’t all bad. Seeing Peggy take up the mantle of Captain Britain was cool. T’Challa as Star Lord was definitely one of the best episodes. Also, the last two episodes were overall pretty great. But, let’s be honest, ‘What If?’ wasn’t all that engaging compared to the other Marvel shows. I loved that they gave more development to Black Widow than we ever saw in the MCU and some of the Doctor Strange storylines in the last few episodes genuinely made me interested in what they might do with season two. But a lot of what we saw here was pretty forgettable. Some of the episodes were so dark that you couldn’t really watch it with your family. Some of the episodes never lived up to their full potential (*cough*Killmonger*cough*). And the Doctor Strange episode was rooted in fridging the main female character in the Doctor Strange film. Meanwhile, all of us know that none of the things that happened in any of the episodes will have any impact on the MCU, which explains why so many people didn’t tune in. None of it’s impactful and I probably won’t return to any of the episodes.

4. ‘Loki’. This show inches above ‘What If?’ because of the genuinely excellent first few episodes. The set up of exploring Loki’s psyche was perfect, as was the dynamic between Loki and Mobius. Also, despite the fact that ‘Loki’s not my favorite, I’m not here to bash Sylvie. Sylvie was a well developed and interesting character. But Loki really lost sight of everything it promised. After Sylvie was introduced it felt like she was the main character instead of Loki. Loki’s main goal for the rest of the series was to be close to her. Sylvie actually sought after her goals. This might have been less noticeable if Loki had other goals aside from Sylvie, or even kept his mischievous and scheming nature. But those things disappeared after the first few episodes, making it feel like Loki as a character was put on hold. And yes, I’m in the camp that felt the Sylvie/Loki relationship was creepy and a disappointment given the bisexual reveal. I do think that Loki is the type that would fall in love with himself, but that isn’t what this was. The narrative was trying to prove Sylvie was different from Loki while maintaining the “same person” connection, making it feel to many of us that they were like siblings. Sylvie’s different personality also effectively ruined the writers attempt to connect the Sylvie/Loki relationship to Loki’s self-love instead of actually letting Loki accept himself. The variants of Loki were also disappointing, as all of them aside from Sylvie were forced into only one episode and all of them scoffed at the idea of a Lady Loki despite the sheer amount of Loki variants. The best part of this series was the relationship between Mobius and Loki, which we didn’t have for the last few episodes. And on top of all of that, the last episode, while it did introduce a cool villain, was nothing more than a giant monologue. I love Loki as a character, but this was a major disappointment.

3. ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’. This show was a whole mix of really great and really bad things. The premise of this series as a whole was kind of frustrating for Sam Wilson’s character. As someone who was close to Steve, and as someone who has obviously been mistreated by the government, it really didn’t make sense that he’d hand the shield over to the government. But Sam’s reasoning for not taking up the mantle of Captain America at first made a lot of sense, and his journey into finding what the shield means to him was exactly what I wanted out of the show. It was also really nice to see a Marvel series address modern-day racism, which was even more potent when it pointed out that even an Avenger like Sam could be discriminated against. Bucky was also incredibly well done. Seeing him deal with the aftermath of being the Winter Soldier was realistically heartbreaking. And his sense of humor made me fall in love with him right away. “Looking strong, John!” is one of the best lines we got in any of the Disney+ shows. The relationship between Bucky and Sam was great too. The entire episode dedicated to the two working on the ship and helping out Sam’s sister was heartwarming. Surprisingly, even Zemo was a highlight of the show. He was made to be an interesting character with interesting motivations. But the series suffered from serious pacing issues. I also hated the somewhat redemption they attempted for John Walker towards the end of the series after he literally beheaded someone with the shield. Also, who were the villains in this again? And can we all forget that Sharon Carter was in this at all, please?

2. ‘Hawkeye’. This series was low stakes, but it was even better for it. Every episode was fun and the genuine relationships developing between characters was endearing without making me wonder if any of them were going to die by the end of the series. Kate Bishop is such a relatable and likable protagonist. I can’t wait to see more of her. And though I’ve had mixed feelings about Clint Barton in the past, this series made me love him. It made him interesting and complex, but also caring and down to earth. He and Kate are one of the best Marvel duos I’ve seen on screen. From the chase scene where Clint loses his hearing aid, to the scene where Kate helps Clint talk to his son, to the impromptu ugly sweater and Christmas movie night, this show made me love and believe their close friendship. These two weren’t the only characters I walked away from the show absolutely loving. Yelena Belova stole every scene she was in. She was hilarious and pleasantly friendly around Kate. Her final fight with Clint was one of the best scenes in the entire show, giving all of us a better idea of who Natasha was than the MCU generally did and allowing both Yelena and Clint closure. The introduction of Echo was also majorly impressive and made me excited for her new show. I love the actual Indigenous representation we’re getting with this character on top of the great deaf representation we got in this show. I expect we’ll also be seeing more of Kingpin in the Echo spinoff, who definitely made an impression in this series. Jack was surprisingly fun in the last episode as well. This whole series was entertaining and wholesome. I can see myself rewatching it many times in the future.

1. ‘WandaVision’. Nothing can beat how incredible the writing, directing, acting, and design of this show was. It still blows me away. Wanda was already becoming one of my favorite MCU characters before this series was released, but the complexities they gave her in this show solidified her as my favorite MCU character. Wanda, of course, created WestView, but the way they explored the relatable topic of grief through her made her both understandable and easy to root for. Plus, they finally revealed her to be the Scarlet Witch, giving us some new powers to speculate over and a new costume that I adore. I loved Vision even more after this series as well. His genuine kindness and quiet intelligence is so amazing to watch, especially as we get to follow him discovering the mysteries of WestView. The White Vision storyline was such an excellent way to end this series with a promise of a future for the character. We also were introduced to Monica Rambeau, a powerful character whose connection to Wanda often made her the hero of the story and who definitely has one of the best superhero transformations of all time. Even the supporting cast of this show was great. Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis both proved themselves to be hilarious and badass, and I can’t wait to see more of them. Agatha Harkness certainly could have used more time, but she was still so much fun to watch. Really my only complaint with this series is Ralph Bohner. And what damage can that reveal really do when so much of the rest of the show was so amazing? Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen should be commended for their comedic acting as well as their easy adaption into each time period. And the effects, music, and genuine love for old television seen throughout each episode of ‘WandaVision’ can’t be ignored. This is one of my favorite MCU projects of all time.

That’s my ranking! As of now I think the only shows I’ll be returning to frequently are ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘WandaVision’, but there are pros and cons to each series! Either way, Marvel fans have been absolutely spoiled with the Disney+ shows so far. I’m really wary of the Multiverse, but the Disney+ shows have given me hope that rather than the overstuffed storylines I’m skeptical of in the MCU right now, we’ll have a medium that will stick with mostly personal stories. These personal stories have made me feel closer to the characters in the MCU than I ever felt before. I can’t wait to see which characters we get to explore next!

Don’t do anything fun until I get back!

Marvel: Who is the Best Spider-Man?

Behind the scenes set picture of Tom Holland as Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man :Homecoming’. Copyright goes to Marvel Entertainment and Tom Holland.

Hi! It’s Annie!

The conversation of who is the best person to portray Spiderman is one that has been going on for a very long time. And for the most part, I’ve stayed well out of it. That’s for more than one reason. Firstly, it’s an intense debate where it seems like everyone who has an opinion on it gets absolutely torn apart no matter where they stand. This is like the one Marvel debate that all ‘Star Wars’ debates are like. The other reason is because, until recently, I hadn’t actually watched any Spiderman film that wasn’t the first two Tom Holland ones or ‘Into the Spiderverse’. (I still haven’t seen the most recent Spiderman film, so please, no spoilers!!!) Last weekend I decided to actually take the plunge and watch all of the live-action Spiderman movies that people at least consider to be good. Meaning, I watched the first two Tobey Maguire movies, the first Andrew Garfield movie, and I rewatched the first Tom Holland movie. And now having watched all those, I can honestly say that I have an opinion on who was the best Spiderman. But please remember that this is just that, an opinion. These are my personal views on the movies and the different iterations of Peter Parker in live-action film form. It’s ok to have a different opinion! But I have a feeling that some of my opinions won’t be very popular and there were a couple things that swayed my vote. With that out of the way, I’m going to rank the three based on my opinion. Let’s go! (SPOILERS for some of the movies ahead!)

Edit- New conclusion at the bottom!!!

Tom Holland:

Even after watching all of these films, he’s still my favorite. I even saved his movie for last when doing my binge-watch, and he was still my favorite. This is one of my less unpopular opinions, because I feel like Tom Holland’s Spiderman is pretty universally liked. All three of these iterations of Peter Parker are supposed to be high school students, but I think Garfield and Maguire come across much more as junior or senior college students. Tom Holland is the only one who passes young enough to actually feel like he’s still a kid. Because that’s what he is. Peter Parker is a minor. He is a child. And Tom Holland captures that beautifully. In the first movie Peter Parker struggles with his secret identity not just because it involves him having to push people close to him away. He also struggles with it because there’s a slight temptation to use it to fit in. In one of the most climactic scenes of the film, Peter gets knocked down and trapped by some rubble and has a panic attack. But these things don’t make Peter weak. They just make him human, which is what the character of Spiderman was always supposed to feel like first and foremost. Peter is still a very strong and heroic character. I remember being completely blown away by the image of Peter carrying the Vulture out of the fire at the end of the film. Because not only had he just saved the villain, he had also put his life on the line for a villain despite how young he is. This version of Spiderman is so breathtakingly selfless in his defense of his city. He’s also funny! I think people forget that Spiderman is a bit of a comedian in the comics, which is one of the reasons why he got paired so often with Deadpool. There’s definitely a comedic lightheartedness about this adaptation. I also want to take a section to talk about his love interest, MJ. An intelligent woman who figures out Peter’s identity all on her own and whose voice and strategies are heard and honored throughout every movie she’s in. She doesn’t just sit on the sidelines. MJ is a great role model for kids as well and her importance in Peter’s life is palpable through actions rather than just words. However, while these movies see some of my favorite adapted characters, the movies have been too MCU focused for me. I hear this latest movie fixes that, but I hope that we get to see a lot more of just Peter-centric plots in the future. Because he deserves to be the only focus of a movie.

Andrew Garfield:

Yes, Andrew Garfield is my second favorite Spiderman. I know I’m about to lose a lot of people with this, but I’ll cover exactly why when I start talking about Tobey Maguire’s version of the character. Garfield brings a very sarcastic and charming side of Peter Parker to the table. This is the Peter Parker that makes the kinds of jokes Spiderman does in the comics. This feels like the exact Peter Parker that Deadpool gets along with. This is also one of the most intelligent versions of the character. Tom Holland’s version is an inventor and a known science wiz, but we don’t see as much of that explored as often. We do see that he invented his webs though. Tobey Maguire is never established as an inventor. Garfield’s rendition of the character creates his own webs and also accidentally created his own villain because of a formula his father started and he completed. The pairing of his intelligence and comedy is perfection and made me laugh out loud at several points. Like Holland, Garfield also has a lot of charm in his Spiderman. Tom Holland’s comes from his youthful innocence while Andrew Garfield’s character has more of a cool big brother vibe. It almost feels like the version of Peter Parker that appears in ‘Into the Spiderverse’. And I love it! It makes him a fun character to watch and an easy character to connect to. I also have to absolutely commend Andrew Garfield’s emotional acting, because if his Peter Parker is in despair you can bet that the audience is feeling it too. Gwen Stacy is also amazing! She’s funny, capable, and even climbs into the fray herself on occasions. She lands a hit on the villain! She’s such an endearing and intelligent character. I hate that they killed her off, but I get that this is what happens in the comics. I would have loved to see Spider-Gwen in live action form! Hopefully we’ll get it someday. The plots to Garfield’s movies were definitely a bit messier, but for me it was totally worth it just to watch the portrayals of Peter and Gwen. You grow very attached to them very quickly!

Tobey Maguire:

I can already hear the fanboys screaming. Yes, this was my least favorite version of Spiderman. Maybe it was because I just don’t have the nostalgia connected to it. Maybe it’s because I didn’t see it when it was one of the only superhero movies out and it far surpassed any other to ever be made. I acknowledge fully that the making of these movies were important and it started the golden age of comic book films that we see now. But watching it for the first time from a modern perspective, I had several problems. Firstly, the character of Peter Parker in these movies felt bland to me in some ways. I loved that the second film in particular had the insight to go into the inner conflict of Peter Parker where he doesn’t know if he even should be Spiderman. And I thought it was even better to then take the extra step and actually show him give it all up. This is a side of superheroes that has still yet to be explored again in this much detail. I think the closest we got to this is probably Clint Barton in the new ‘Hawkeye’ series. And even that is not to this extent. But my issue is that Peter Parker here doesn’t really have much of a personality beyond his love of Mary Jane. Who is also without personality. There’s no comedy to be had here. And I do agree that Marvel movies now probably rely too much on comedy, but Spiderman was written to be comedic in the comics as well. I wanted to look at this Peter and see the nuances of layered personality traits. Instead I just saw a superhero or the guy who likes Mary Jane. It felt like a lot of the old portrayals of Superman before superhero writing got better, just less muscly and more geeky. And Mary Jane was possibly my least favorite part of all of the movies. She was either damseled or being creepily followed by at least two guys (including Peter). The main thing her character did in any of the movies was change boyfriends. The one time she almost did something useful she was immediately knocked out. Don’t get me wrong, there were things I liked about these movies. Like the action sequences and the entire scene in the second movie where the citizens on the bus protect Peter. That was absolutely touching. But I didn’t like Peter or Mary Jane all that much, which made it more difficult for to me to connect to it.

Update:

After seeing the new movie, I can say that Andrew Garfield is now by far my favorite Spiderman. Between Tom Holland’s character losing some of his intelligence and Andrew Garfield bringing so much emotion; I’ve been completely won over. No portrayal is this fun and warm. I really hope that Andrew Garfield gets more movies!

I want to say here that I think Holland, Garfield, and Maguire are all excellent actors and did excellent jobs with what they had. Any issues I had with character, I mostly attribute to writing and possibly directing as well. And I think every single one of them has their own merits as both Peter Parker and Spiderman! It looks like Garfield might get more movies for his portrayal of Spiderman, which I would love to see. And I really can’t wait to see the new movie! Hopefully I’ll see it soon and be able to review it soon after! And, once again, these are just my opinions so feel free to disagree with them!

See you across the pond!

Sincerely, Annie

Video Games: ‘Tales of Arise’ Review

Screenshot of the characters Shionne and Alphen in ‘Tales of Arise’. Copyright goes to Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Hey! Hallie here!

I haven’t done a video game review in far too long. For some time I lost some of my motivation to get up and turn on my PlayStation, but I’ve been slowly gaining that motivation back and with that comes exploring new games! One of the major games that’s been on my radar this year is ‘Tales of Arise’, a new addition to, and a soft reboot of, the ‘Tales of’ series. I had played a couple ‘Tales of’ games in the past and I loved ‘Tales of Berseria’ in particular, so a new addition to the series definitely wasn’t an offensive idea to me. The fact that this game is also a soft reboot of the series, allowing the creators to connect future games in ways they hadn’t completely done before, really intrigued me. Plus if you’ve heard anything at all about this game from the gaming community, you know practically everyone’s singing this game’s praises right now. So how is it? Did I agree with the majority of opinions on it? For starters I’m going to say I recommend this game. But know there are story SPOILERS in the rest of this review, so be sure you’re comfortable with that before venturing forward.

Gameplay:

I play games mostly for the story, but no one wants to play a game with horrible gameplay. Fortunately for you, this game is really fun. ‘Tales of Arise’ is a real-time combat heavy game. So that alone should help you decide if this game’s for you. Like other ‘Tales of’ games, each character has specific attacks that you can link to different buttons on your console to customize your play style. Either way it gets button mashy, but I really don’t mind some button mashing as long as there’s variety and there’s plenty of that in this game. There’s also various kinds of special attacks you can unleash at certain points in battle that come with visually stunning animations to make it feel even more rewarding. Overall, combat feels very smooth and fun. It’s challenging enough to make me feel accomplished after I defeat every boss, but not so challenging as to keep me on one singular boss for hours or make me feel as though I need several hours of grinding to move forward. That’s another thing I loved about this gameplay. Grinding didn’t feel like a chore. In many games such as this, the game encourages you to fight every single enemy in an area in order to properly level your characters up. Not only that, but running into one enemy will be deceptive, as when the game takes you into a different area to battle, more enemies will be present. None of this occurs in this game. When you see two wild beasts grazing in the grass, you can trust you’ll be only fighting those two for the time being. And the game encourages you to keep an eye on how exhausted your characters are far more than it encourages you to fight every enemy you see. This way you can level up your characters while still taking breaks and avoiding some battles, and you don’t have to feel guilty for it.

Story:

This game has some excellent world building and the focus on it is where this story shines. The first thing this game establishes are the twin planets of Rena and Dahna. Rena is a world full of the rich and powerful whose main form of entertainment, and means of choosing a leader, is something called the Crown Contest. This contest sees lords from various houses on Rena being sent down to Dahna, a world full of poor, subjugated individuals, to prove themselves. They do this by being assigned to one of the five realms in Dahna and using the citizens there as slaves in order to harvest a type of energy from them. The lord with the most energy by the end of the competition is named the leader of Rena. Obviously, the inhabitants of Dahna are pretty tired of this arrangement. Especially our main character, Alphen, who starts the story off as a slave with no memory of his past and an inability to feel pain. By chance he meets a Renan girl names Shionne, who was ostracized by her own people for having a curse called Thorns. This curse makes it impossible for her to touch anyone without harming them, but Alphen’s inability to feel pain immediately makes them the perfect match. Well, that and the fact that both are hell bent on taking down all of the lords stationed on Dahna, effectively ending the Crown Contest and destroying Rena’s power over Dahna. Throughout the game you visit each of the five realms on Dahna, all gorgeously animated and perfectly unique. Each area is also based off of the four elements with light and darkness added onto them.

The game starts out in Orbus Calaglia, a sandy wasteland with volcanoes to indicate its fire origins. Cyslodia, a largely snowy forest with a beautiful medieval town in the center, is the land of light. My favorite area, Elde Menancia, a beautiful land of rock formations, farmland, and a grand and festive town, is the land of earth. A destroyed town surrounded by marsh and run by windmills represents air. And finally, Ganath Haros always has rainy weather, is surrounded by rivers, and has a giant castle of mostly reflective designs to indicate its water origins. All but one is a ruled by a cruel lord (I’ll get to that in a moment) and to get to the realm of darkness one only has to hop a spaceship and fly to Rena. Because of course they represent darkness. Each area has a unique story and each lord rules in a very different way to keep your attention throughout the game. My only gripe here is that, in much the same way as ‘Kingdom Hearts’, this game’s story gets too complicated. After the first part of the game, where you defeat the five lords, the game jumps you straight into part two. Part two info-dumps on you all the information they didn’t tell you in part one. And it gets ridiculous. From the fact that both planets are technically sentient but in different ways, to a ritual meant to pass energy between the two planets, to the complicated identity of the Sovereign and who holds the Sovereign’s powers, to a strange connection between Shionne and one of her ancestors. It makes your brain hurt by the end of it and I really wish they would have taken out at least one of these story elements to clean it up a little.

Characters:

Here’s where my attention usually lies. Characters are what really attach me to a story and I had high expectations for all of the characters here. Some of them lived up to my expectations. Alphen, our protagonist, gets introduced without his memories, a mask covering all or part of his face, and the inability to feel pain. You’d think that would make this character interesting. Unfortunately, Alphen acts like every other “determined” anime protagonist you’ve seen. He’s nice, but only because he keeps reminding you exactly what his morals are in each scene. He gets a moment to be angsty halfway through the game, but only so he can come off as a bit of a dick to the audience before he goes back to just being himself. There’s nothing interesting about Alphen. As for Shionne, she’s a much more interesting protagonist. She’s used to fending for herself because of her curse, so she finds it difficult to work in a group. She’s also a badass that often serves as a voice of reason in the group. However, Shionne gets knocked down several pegs for being damseled multiple times in this game. Not only is she kidnapped halfway through the game, but in the final battle she gets trapped in a “mystical battle”, effectively removing her from the final fight with the main villain. Really? At least the romance between these two is cute.

Along with our main characters we have four side characters. Law is introduced as the son of a character who has so many death flags on him once you meet him, you’d have to have not consumed any media ever in order to be surprised by his demise. Law plays a hand in this death, but quickly changes his ways and tries to save his father right before it occurs. This moment is cool, but unfortunately we don’t get much for Law after this. However, he’s saved by being hilarious and completely relatable. Rinwell is introduced to us as the last of the Dahnan’s who have the ability to use magic. She’s also a complete Renan hater due to her parents’ murder. Towards the beginning of the story I got really tired of her constant anti-Renan dialogue. However, the second half of the game sees her change her ways and connect a lot more with the main plot, making her a far more likable character in the process. Next we have the lady knight, Kisara. Like Law, Kisara doesn’t get much. Her brother dies and her entire world view changes because of that, but afterwards we only get a lot of her being the anime overbearing mom trope. I want to like her, but I’ve seen it all before. And finally, I saved the best for last, let’s talk about Dohalim. Dohalim is the one kind lord ruling in Dahna. He doesn’t want to win the Crown Contest and so he doesn’t enslave his people. But it turns out Dohalim made this choice because the suffering of the slaves reminds him of his trauma, not because he’s a nice guy. He understands that’s not great of him though, so he spends the game trying to make everything right. He even gets an entire area dedicated to an additional part of his backstory later on, painting him as even nobler. In my opinion, Dohalim steals every scene he’s in.

Those are my thoughts on ‘Tales of Arise’! This isn’t a perfect game. As I said, part two can get complicated and sometimes quite dry. Additionally, some of the characters aren’t all that amazing. But the gameplay is great, the world building is incredible, and with such a large cast, you’re bound to find at least one character you can connect to. Overall, I really enjoyed this game. I’m excited to see what Bandai’s planning to do with the next game, as well as how they’re going to go about connecting the games now that they’re re-establishing a universe for them to exist in. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see!

Don’t do anything fun until I get back!

K-Pop: Mnet Needs To Go

Screenshot of Jung Yunho in ‘The Real’ MV. Copyright goes to ATEEZ and KQ Entertainment.

Hi! It’s Annie!

So, I initially wasn’t going to write about this topic today because nothing has been confirmed yet. But from past allegations we’ve seen about Mnet and more and more workers for the company coming out and confirming some stuff, I think this needs to be talked about. My sister and I have talked about the mistreatment of idols several times on our blog. Both by companies and fans themselves. And as more information comes out, it almost seems that no company treats idols quite as badly as Mnet. You might have seen all the trending tags on Twitter regarding several groups and especially what happened at the MAMAs (Mnet’s award show) this year, and if you haven’t I’m going to cover everything recently that happened with them and all the other allegations against Mnet. Because I will not stand to see any idols be treated this way. If any of this is even slightly true, which it looks like it is, this treatment of idols is nothing less than atrocious and almost monstrous.

BTS Clean Up:

So, I’m going to start out with this because it’s the least of the issues I want to talk about. Many fans were complaining that BTS won all of the major awards and some of the minor awards at the MAMAs and said that they wished BTS would leave awards to groups who need the recognition. I hate to say it, but we’re going to see this for a while and there’s nothing we can do about it. Obviously, I’m an ARMY and BTS is the main group that I stan, but I do also see that smaller groups need the awards more than BTS does. But the fact is, all the K-Pop centered awards shows have no choice but to acknowledge BTS and if they’re up for an award, they are probably going to win it. That’s just the way things are going to be for quite some time. I understand the frustration, but it all comes with how popular BTS has been and continues to be. BTS themselves have no control over their nominations or whether or not they win. So please don’t pin the blame on BTS themselves.

TXT Cut Off:

Now that that is out of the way, let’s get into the stuff we all can fully blame Mnet for cruel behavior for. TXT actually won an award at this year’s MAMAs, but that’s about all the respect that Mnet showed them. In a picture lineup for all the performances from this year Mnet conveniently left out TXT and also did very little to acknowledge Enhypen either, leading many fans to rightly accuse Mnet of having prejudice against HYBE groups. Most people already know that BTS was not present at this year’s awards. And we’ll see if HYBE even sends any of their groups there again after this year. The apparent prejudice continued when TXT won an award and went up to make their speech. American fans are definitely familiar with having heard that an award show purposely played out an artist before they were done with their acceptance speech. That’s exactly what was done here. And TXT had barely said anything before Mnet decided to essentially kick them off the stage, including turning the lights off on them. The microphones were also malfunctioning throughout TXT’s performance. Many people might think that this was just an accident and a technological problem, but history with Mnet makes this behavior suspicious. Because Mnet has been known to tamper with artists mics before, especially on their competition shows to try and make some artists have less votes than others. I’ll get back to that.

ATEEZ Snub:

I think we all know that ATEEZ performed at the MAMAs by now because they got some of the premiere performing slots. And their performances really blew up! I was especially proud as a Yunho bias that “that blonde guy from ATEEZ” started trending after their performances. Yay to more Yunho recognition! But many also noticed that ATEEZ weren’t actually nominated for any awards. Yes, you read that right. One of the most popular fourth generation groups was not even nominated for any of the awards. It wasn’t even that they just didn’t win any. And with ATEEZ’s rapidly increasing fanbase, especially internationally, it was clear that their performances were used much in the same way that the Grammys used BTS. They put them in premiere performance slots for the viewership of their fans without actually giving them anything in return. I have absolutely no idea why they would do this, but ATEEZ was definitely used. Yeosang also said that their mics were having issues, which is also not the best.

ATEEZ and ‘Kingdom’:

Oh, you thought the ATEEZ mistreatment was over? It’s actually ATEEZ information that’s getting Mnet in so much trouble right now. And part of that is because, right after their snub at the MAMAs, information on the full scale of how ATEEZ was treated on Mnet’s competition show ‘Kingdom’ was released. And the list of mistreatments toward ATEEZ by the Mnet staff is a long list. The first accusation claims that ATEEZ members were frequently yelled at to get them to do tasks faster. Most Atiny know that the filming of ‘Kingdom’ actually coincided with the release and promotion schedule for ATEEZ’s latest album at the time. ATEEZ members even admitted to only being able to sleep a couple hours on some nights and on others not having the time to sleep at all. I can’t even imagine having a schedule like that. And to hear that they were yelled at during all of this is even worse. But that’s not all. ATEEZ were given worse accommodations than every other group on the show, contrary to popular belief that Mnet was favoring them during the competition. They received the smallest dressing room of all the groups, they were often forced to eat their lunches on a tiny rooftop space, and (most notably) they were given the least comfortable accommodations for their reaction filming. Most other groups were given pretty luxury looking rooms with giant sofas, while ATEEZ’s room appeared to be small and they were all sitting in office chairs. This was something that people picked up on while watching the show because it was easy to notice the difference. This and the fact that their performance of ‘Rhythm Ta’ was actually cut to feature as much reactions as the performance itself, forcing Atinys to go to Mnet’s Youtube channel to watch any satisfactory length of the performance. On top of this, ATEEZ were not informed by Mnet that there would be a sports outdoor episode, so the members turned up in the wrong kind of clothing. And Mnet described ATEEZ as only having seven members and did no research on the member positions of the group or their ages. They even listed San as being a part of ‘The BOYZ’ on one occasion. Despite how good their performances looked, it is clear by this that they received no preferential treatment form Mnet and more than likely experienced the opposite.

Past Mess Ups:

I want to note that, though these instances are more recent, Mnet has done stuff like this in the past. For example, EXO fans were once told that they weren’t allowed to bring their lightsticks into the venue, which would have effectively given the group a black ocean. One of the worst performance reactions you can get as a K-Pop artist. The members of EXO were also overworked and treated poorly by staff. One member of the group was even forced to throw up into a water bottle on the side of the stage because he was sick from being overworked and Mnet staff wouldn’t let him off stage. EXO has not been back to the MAMAs since this incident. BTS fans will recall one performance of ‘Airplane Pt.2’ where the performance itself looked amazing but nobody could actually hear any of the boys because their mics were turned down so low. You would think that if this microphone thing wasn’t malicious, they would have done something to fix it after three years of this consistently happening. But none of this is new. Mnet has been treating idols horrendously for years. And we shouldn’t just forget about it until the next awful thing comes up.

If you take anything from this, please make sure that you stop consuming any and all Mnet content. And this is more than you think. Even I have had to be hyper aware of this. Just this morning I was watching Namjoon fancams and clicked on an Mnet one only to then realize what I had just done and immediately stop watching the video. Mnet is a huge channel on Youtube for fancams, so please stop watching their fancams and instead watch fancams by literally any other of the dozens of groups that film them as well. I would also highly recommend deleting ‘The Real’ by ATEEZ off of any downloads if it’s the one that was released on the ‘Kingdom’ album. ATEEZ just released their own version on their own album, so make sure to stream that one instead. We can’t keep letting Mnet get away with this horrendous treatment of idols. Idols are human beings, they aren’t robots. This has to stop now.

See you across the pond!

Sincerely, Annie

Sci-Fi/ Superheroes: ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Review

Screenshot of Finn Wolfhard as Trevor, Mckenna Grace as Phoebe, and Logan Kim as Podcast in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’. Copyright goes to Columbia Pictures, BRON Studios, and Ghostcorps.

Hey! Hallie here!

I finally got to see the long awaited ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ in theaters! This is definitely a bit late but, as many who follow this blog know, I live in a bit of a conservative area that makes me warier than most to go out to the movies. However, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ was the one movie that released this year that I knew I wanted to see in theaters. After waiting for the demand for this movie to die down a bit, and desperately avoiding spoilers in the process, I can finally review it! To start this off I want to confess that I’m a giant ‘Ghostbusters’ fan. The first film was the first “scary” movie I could sit through and genuinely enjoy as a kid who was scared of almost everything. As such, this entire franchise holds a special place in my heart and this movie was my most anticipated film of the last few years. So did it live up to my expectations? Yes. The answer is yes and then some. I loved this movie so much and I’m going to talk about it all in a second, but here’s your SPOILER warning. I’m hoping most of you have seen it already, but if you haven’t, tread carefully.

The Story: So many people were skeptical of this movie before it even came out because of the fan service that is obviously present. This seemed to indicate to some fans that the movie would try to stick too closely to the premise of the original ‘Ghostbusters’ film. I can now say with confidence that this movie does nothing of the sort. It isn’t about a bunch of scientists starting a ghost busting business. It’s a deeply personal story about family. The whole movie starts out with Callie, a single mother of two children, being evicted from her home. This winds up being the worst news she receives that day though she learns of her father’s death right before it, whom she despises for abandoning her. Despite her original interest in getting whatever money she can from what her father left her in his will, her sudden eviction means that she can’t just sell the house he left her, she has to live in it. And even that isn’t as temporary as she hopes once Janine shows up (Yay!) and tells her that she’s likely to be facing more debt rather than more money for her family. Meanwhile, her son, Trevor, is trying his best to fit in as fast as possible after a fast-food worker, Lucky, catches his eye. He lies about his age, gets tricked into doing the work everyone else hates at his minimum wage job, and worries that he’ll be stuck forever in a place he considers to be “a dump”. As for his sister, Phoebe, she hasn’t ever fit in anywhere. To the point that her mother worries that she’ll always push the people around her away. And yet, it’s Phoebe who manages to adjust the fastest to their new life and brings her family together. This family is the center of the film, and the fact that its major action comes from their adjustment to difficult circumstances while Phoebe uncovers her family’s past makes it wildly different from the original, but just as heartfelt.

The Kids: I do like the adults in this film, and I’ll talk about them in a bit, but the kids are where this movie really shines. Lucky is probably the least focused on of the four kids in this movie, but she’s always fun to watch on screen. She’s refreshingly grounded and confident, which plays nicely against Trevor’s constant anxiety over being liked. Trevor has a bit more depth. His insecurities are well explored during the film and his loyalty towards his sister is very touching. The real stand-outs in this film though, are Phoebe and Podcast. These two get to do the most ghostbusting and they’re definitely the most fun to follow. Podcast first gets introduced by thrusting a microphone into Phoebe’s face while dramatically narrating her mysterious appearance in town. It’s all part of his podcast, hence why he calls himself Podcast, where he discusses spooky mysteries that he comes across. This whole thing could come off as really annoying, but this character avoids annoying entirely and jumps straight to endearing. He’s outrageously supportive of everything Phoebe does and demands to be by her side when she begins to explore her ghostbusting heritage, even when things start to get dangerous. Everyone wants a friend like Podcast. I leave probably the best for last with Phoebe. Phoebe is outrageously smart for her age, even blowing away seismologist Mr. Grooberson when she meets him. But she isn’t some perfect girl-genius. She’s painfully awkward and so bad at making friends that she starts to learn adorably terrible jokes in order to relate herself to others. Seeing her come out of her shell as the mystery of what her grandfather was doing before his death unfolds, is perhaps the most rewarding part of the movie. Especially as she begins to connect to her past, feeling understandably betrayed by her mother for not telling her that she was never abnormal, but rather following in the footsteps of Egon Spengler, a fellow scientist and her grandfather. She’s the heart of the film and I would pay for much more Ghostbusters content starring Mckenna Grace.

The Adults: Callie and Gary Grooberson don’t get as much focus as the kids, but they’re still fun characters. Mr. Grooberson is played by Paul Rudd, which makes it absolutely impossible to dislike him. Grooberson’s a summer school teacher, but he doesn’t take the job too seriously. He takes up class time to play old VHS tapes of ‘Cujo’ and ‘Child’s Play’. His true passion is science and seismology, making him the first person in the town to notice that their frequent earthquakes are abnormal explosions rather than actual earthquakes. He’s not the most level-headed guy. He’s definitely the type of person to blow something up in the name of science. But he’s the type of guy you’d want to hang out with, and that’s enough. Callie, on the other hand, is hard to pin down. She’s a loving mother, but her prejudice against her father makes her flawed. She doesn’t tell her children about the giant supernatural event that occurred to her father in the 80’s or even who their grandfather is. Anytime Phoebe begins to wonder that there may be a purpose to her grandfather living in the middle of nowhere, Callie shuts her down to the point of driving a wedge between them. But that makes her story all the more rewarding when she finally interacts with Egon’s ghost, guiding her down to all of the pictures he kept of her. By learning that her abandonment was a sacrifice rather than a willing choice, she gets some closure. She’s also badass in the final battle and quick to throw herself in front of Phoebe despite knowing nothing about ghostbusting. I definitely enjoyed our keymaster and gatekeeper this time around.

The Ghostbusters: These guys get a section all to their own. Its was so nice to see Dan, Ernie, and Bill back. All of their dialogue was authentic to their characters, which makes sense because the actors had quite a bit of say in that regard. I loved that Ray is still working at ‘Ray’s Occult’ and that he still talks a mile a minute about topics that are seemingly unrelated to the problem at hand. He also 100% WOULD be the only subscriber to Podcast’s podcast. Peter’s relationship with Dana, as shown mostly through the end credits scene, is perfect, as are all of his quips to Gozer. Winston went on to start a lucrative business, which makes so much sense for his character. I loved that he was financially supporting the rest of the guys while keeping his eyes on the firehouse in the hopes of buying it again. Given the end credits scene, it even seems like he might be the one to start up a new era of Ghostbusting. All of it was tastefully done. Even the ending where they come in to save the day. Ray, Peter, and Winston help the rest of the characters take down Gozer, but it’s still the kids who do most of the work. In my opinion, it’s the perfect passing of the torch. My only issue was Ray’s fall out with Egon. I don’t dislike that Ray and Egon had a fall out. In fact, picking Ray as the one who tells Phoebe that Egon can “burn in hell” is the most impactful choice you can make. But there has to be a really good reason for it, and Ray not believing Egon’s warnings about the apocalypse isn’t one of them. I can see Peter or even Winston getting angry at Egon for driving away business with a claim like that. But I can’t see a scenario where Ray wouldn’t hear Egon out on his Gozer theory. Although, I can believe that Ray would be hurt by Egon stealing so much equipment.

Egon: And finally, the most emotional element of the movie as well as the most controversial. I thought Egon’s presence was done perfectly from beginning to end. In the opening sequence we see Egon die in an attempt to use a giant trap he rigged to stop Gozer. Some fans didn’t like this death, but I thought it made perfect sense. The mystery of Egon turning his back on his family and friends is revealed to be because he stood vigilant trying to keep them all safe. It only makes sense for him to give his life for that cause. Not only that, but his spirit would only linger if he had unfinished business, and that certainly counts as unfinished business. I especially loved that this sequence never revealed his face. It’s respectful and doesn’t feel excessive. As the film goes on we feel his presence in every scene in his house. He plays chess with Phoebe to reveal himself and leads her to a trap in an attempt to get her to finish what he started. I loved the moment where he helps Phoebe fix a proton pack and shows off his PhDs in the process. He even helps Trevor start up the Ecto-1. But the moment every Ghostbuster fan is going to remember for years to come is the moment where his hand closes over Phoebe’s as she fights Gozer and we get to see Egon for the first time in many years. Egon stands with the other Ghostbusters for one final time while they all apologize for not keeping in touch, saying a last goodbye. He gets to fully interact with his grandchildren for the first time. And he hugs Callie, closing up her storyline as well. After that whole scene the film didn’t wait for the credits before giving us a giant “For Harold” sign in the sky. Not everyone is happy with his presence at the end, and I understand the hesitation. Using the likenesses of beloved actors who have passed on can too easily be mishandled. However, they took the perfect precautions for this sequence. They chose to involve Harold’s daughter in the design of Egon’s spirit, chose to keep Egon silent, and decided on footage of Harold as Egon, not of Harold himself, in order to honor his memory. The care and concern behind these decisions comes through.

Those were my thoughts on ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’. This movie is one of the best editions to the Ghostbusters franchise I could have hoped for. It was exciting, heartwarming, and had the perfect amount of respect for the films that came before. I fully sobbed for the last ten minutes of this film and I don’t regret a thing. The movie did pretty well at the box office, especially considering quarantine, so I hope that it indicates that more movies are coming in the future. I can’t wait to see what Ghostcorps gives us next!

Don’t do anything fun until I get back!

BTS: Reminders and Rewatching

Hi! It’s Annie!

There’s a lot that’s happening right now with BTS, despite the fact that they are on a break, and I really want to talk about all of it. Because some of it is really nice and makes me excited and other things are… not so great. And by that, I’m not at all talking about anything that BTS is doing and I am entirely referring to some behavior from ARMY that I’m going to ask people to rethink. So this post in general is going to be a lot of different topics on our boys as well as some looking back at the concert because of the recent online rewatch of day four of the concert. Which just so happens to be the day that I attended! So with that, I’m just going to get into it!

Jimin and Taehyung Attacks:

So, I’m going to possibly single out a section of the fandom here and I apologize for that in advance. But there’s a lot that I want people to consider. Recently, Jimin was attacked by people who say that they are ARMY entirely because Jimin and Jungkook got more recorded time at the recent concert together. Why would that be a bad thing to anyone? Because shipping, that’s why. Fans of the ship between Taehyung and Jungkook started attacking Jimin because they felt oddly threatened by the footage. Which then caused fans of the Jimin and Jungkook ship to attack Taehyung in turn. We’ve said this several times on our blog, but if you don’t like every single member of BTS, then you aren’t an ARMY. I am generally very lenient with what I consider it takes to be part of any fandom. If a person likes the thing and considers themselves a fan of that thing, then they’re a fan. But you can’t be a fan of BTS if you don’t like all seven members. BTS is seven. If you spew any sort of hatred towards any member of the group, you cannot call yourself an ARMY. And do you really think that Taehyung and Jimin, who are best friends, would approve in any way of hate being spread towards each other? I also want to point out the dangers of shipping here. Shipping real people is not ok. Many people think that shipping real people is harmless; but ARMYs who know better having to show love to Jimin and Taehyung to bury the hate brought on by a shipping war proves this wrong. Shipping is not harmless. Shipping can make the subjects of your ship uncomfortable and it can also cause hate like this to spread. Never mind the fact that we shouldn’t be assuming anything at all about their personal lives. Speaking of which…

Namjoon and Instagram:

I think we’re all pretty much aware at this point that during their break, all the members joined Instagram. Which has been amazing so far! I especially like seeing some of them complain about the app in extremely hilarious and relatable ways. But possibly my favorite thing that the app has brought us, is Namjoon constantly posting pictures of himself Namjooning. Which I love! What I don’t love so much is people looking at the pictures the members post and trying to pry into their personal lives. Namjoon has posted several pictures with a guy whose face is always covered by an emoji, and people started assuming that this person is Namjoon’s boyfriend. This is ridiculous. I’m not saying Namjoon can’t have a boyfriend, but there is no way you come out of this a respectful ARMY if you are continuing to spread this. Firstly, many people see this as a joke or at least an extension to the whole “Namjoon has a wife and children” joke. When it comes to real people, spreading jokes about their personal lives like this isn’t funny. Because whether or not you actually view it as a joke, you are still helping to spread the rumor by posting it. I don’t think any of our boys deserve the spread of any rumors of any kind about them. If you do believe this to be true, despite the fact that it is still a rumor, spreading this information is still problematic. Namjoon obviously covered this person’s face for a reason. On the chance (that none of us could possibly know) that he is dating this person, he obviously hasn’t made it public for a reason. So spreading it is still not what Namjoon wants. I’ve seen a lot of ARMY being called homophobic for making the argument I just made, which is also awful. Some ARMYs who have been supporting this argument are actually part of the LGBTQ+ community themselves. The point here is to not assume anything about their personal lives, because it is none of our business and we are not entitled to that information. You shouldn’t assume any of their sexualities, and that includes assuming that they’re straight. Seriously, just don’t assume anything at all. What I find even more ironic about this situation is that Jin has mentioned fishing with one specific friend for a while and no one assumed anything about that. And just a couple weeks ago the same people now saying that Namjoon has a boyfriend were swearing up and down the wall that BTS’s performance with Megan Thee Stallion at the concert was irrevocable proof that Namjoon had a crush on her. It comes down to this. If Namjoon himself has not verbally confirmed it, it is a rumor. Period. And we are not here to help the spread of rumors about our boys. It does more harm than good. And if you were spreading this as a joke, also reconsider. Jokes about the rumor still help in the spreading of it. Leave their personal lives alone. None of us are entitled to that information and they share enough of their lives with us as it is.

Update: We just got an update to this. Namjoon posted two pictures of interest on his instagram page that pretty much dismantled boyfriend rumors. One was a picture of him and another guy who’s face was once again covered by an emoji, but this man had a completely different haircut than the one in the last picture we saw. The other was a picture of four silhouettes, Namjoon, two men, and a woman. Some are saying that the woman is his mother. Namjoon did say that his family was at the LA concert, making it likely that he is actually traveling with members of his family. They could be his friends though. We don’t and shouldn’t know. People are now claiming that they always knew that the guy in the one picture was not his boyfriend. Really, this should go to show all of us that we can’t possibly know their personal lives and that spreading rumors of any kind is always misled. Again, if he has a boyfriend that’s awesome for him. But that isn’t our place to know and none of us know him personally, so we can’t know the full story. And we also should not keep completely ignoring the members of BTS when they say they have no time to date. I mean, they just got their first break in two years. Would you have time to date with that schedule?

Jimin and Instagram:

This is my last lecture section, I swear. A lot of ARMYs have been trending Jimin lately on Twitter because of his lack of posting to Instagram. And while it is true that he’s been the least active on the website of the members, trying to get him to come back or trending him in an effort to get him to “come home” is a misled endeavor at best. BTS are on a break. This is their first time having the holidays off in years. Yes, some of them are choosing to post on Instagram. But that doesn’t mean that all of them have to. Jimin can do whatever he wants with his break, including choosing not to post to Instagram. Leave him alone and let him enjoy his break.

Rewatching the Concert:

On Saturday the final day of the concert was re-run on Weverse and I definitely was there to watch it. That was one of the best nights I have ever experienced and of course I wanted to relive it! I also have to admit that while I was there I wasn’t watching the screen much because I was too enamored with the fact that they were actually physically in front of me. So I missed some of the smaller interactions between members. For example, I didn’t realize that Tae was smiling conspiratorially before Chris Martin came on stage. And my sister didn’t see Tae and Jimin’s mirror reflections reach towards each other during ‘Blue and Grey’. Can we talk about the fact that Namjoon is so tall that he was at level with his mirror? Anyways, though the internet wasn’t great where I was at, I loved being able to experience the concert again. I especially liked being able to fully hear and take in what they were saying during their goodbyes. Namjoon’s heartfelt explanation of his own experiences hit even harder the second time around. And I think the full force of the fact that I saw them perform ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears’, which is where it started for me in falling in love with the group, hit me completely while watching this. I seriously would love to relive this concert for the rest of my life. Though I do admit that the screen effects, especially the hands that covered the boys some of the time, weren’t the greatest choice. At least we got to see the boys making fun of Jimin up close during “Save Me”! I miss them so much already and I hope I can see them again very soon! I’m so glad so many ARMYs were reliving it too!

So, I’m still experiencing the last bits of post concert depression. I feel like Namjoon may have become my comfort person after all of this. But I also wanted to talk about some of the things we’ve warned against on this blog before. There are a lot of ways that ARMYs can accidentally delve into private bits of the members lives we shouldn’t know without knowing that we’re doing it. We’re so used to them being open with us that sometimes we feel like we should know more information or even feel that we do know more information about them. Most of us have been guilty of this at some point in some way. I just ask that as an ARMY you try and be as respectful as you can and as wary about delving into their privacy as you can. Each and every one of them deserves our full respect and that also means respecting their privacy in every way we possibly can. I hope that will be the last time I have to cover some of these topics for a while. My general experience with ARMY is that it is made up of incredibly nice people. But every once in a while some ARMY will get to be a little too much, and that can also scare potential newer fans away as well as make the boys uncomfortable. I also want to confirm here that I am not actually going to talk about Monsta X’s new album. “The Dreaming” itself was a beautiful song, but I’m not sure how much I have to say here. I still recommend the group though, but this will be the last time I mention the new album most likely.

See you across the pond!

Sincerely, Annie

Hey! Hallie here!

‘ZERO: FEVER EPILOGUE’ finally dropped yesterday and if you’ve been on this blog this past week, you know how excited I was for it. I gushed about the “Turbulence” music video as well as how emotional the song itself made me. From just that song I expected great things from this comeback. And this comeback exceeded by expectations more than I ever could have imagined. It isn’t the hype album we tend to expect from ATEEZ. ATEEZ generally does albums full of badass concepts and thrumming beats. This album definitely has some of its own faster songs as well, but the primary pieces on it are slower and more heartfelt. If anyone thought ATEEZ could only do one type of style before, ‘ZERO: FEVER EPILOGUE’ proves them miserably wrong. The slower ballads here are some of the best I’ve heard in the entire K-Pop industry. Every member shines in each song and delivers a side to them we haven’t fully seen explored in past works from ATEEZ. I could talk about how gorgeous the album was all day, but let’s focus up and look at these songs individually.

“Turbulence”:

As I noted above, I actually already did a deep dive on this song. When the music video came out I very much felt like I needed to talk about how much I personally related to the lyrics. The song discusses feeling lost in life. Feeling like there’s a goal you should be meeting, but being unsure how to get there or even what that goal is. It goes through struggles with patience, trying to discover what you should be doing when it’s hard enough to be true to yourself, and even battling against depression. But ultimately, the song encourages all of its listeners to strive to be themselves above all other things. The song is relatable to many, especially those who were left without a direction during the pandemic. And it’s delivered expertly, by each member. Yunho and Seonghwa ground each verse with calmer, sweeter tones that each pair with Yeosang’s deeper vocals. I love how Yeosang is stepping out and getting much more time in each of these songs, and his lower register is perfectly somber throughout “Turbulence”. Wooyoung and San interject most through the choruses and their voices are impactful. I was blown away watching the power these two had while doing a live performance of this song. Mingi and Hongjoong, as usual, deliver amazing rap verses here. They don’t get a ton of time overall in this album, but their rap verses are low and melodic, and we even get to hear both of them sing at points. And, of course Jongho’s voice is unmatched within the industry. He comes in during the chorus each time to tug at your heartstrings, and I don’t think anyone can resist the emotion in his voice, nor his incredible range. Despite my love of all the songs on this album, this one remains to be my favorite.

“Be With You”:

We have another ballad! This song is very heavily piano based which gives it a simpler, pretty feel. Until it gets to the chorus and the rest of the instruments kick in to pack an emotional punch. Yeah, that’s right. Even after “Turbulence” you’re not allowed to escape the emotions. If ATEEZ’s goal was to make me cry for the entire album, I’d say they succeeded. This song describes being there for someone who’s struggling. It does this by both confessing how painful it is to see someone you care about going through a tough time, and pledging to stay by their side. I’m not sure if this was the point, but I feel like this could very much relate to the way ATEEZ has been attempting to be there for their fans throughout the pandemic. Whether it is or not, the message of the song is still very strong. Though this is another ballad, I was surprised to hear some differences in the way some of the members were utilized here. Yunho and Seonghwa both deliver some sweeter vocals throughout, but Seonghwa also gets quite a bit of time in the chorus both for the bittersweet ending and the powerful beginning. Every time the chorus came up I was blown away by his contributions. Yunho, meanwhile, hit some notes I didn’t even know were part of his range. San and Yeosang both also surprise with a much higher range here than they had in “Turbulence”. Wooyoung shows off the power his voice holds in the chorus of this song once again. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him belt out notes like this before this album, but I’m appreciating it so much. Mingi and Hongjoong get very little in this song, only appearing once towards the end where they switch off singing. I do like their singing voices, though! And Jongho’s here to hit you with his incredible voice and all the feels once more. What’s not to love?

“The Letter”:

Finally, we get a little bit of time to breathe and wipe our tears. “The Letter” is a peppier song, but in a way that’s still very calming and easy to listen to. The message is similar to “Be With You”, but with a bit more of a positive spin. The song alludes to being there for each other through difficult times, but it’s more about being thankful for the time spent with one another. Here we get some great, calming vocals from all members. We get some more Wooyoung and San showing off the belt they both have showcased in this album, just in an easier form. Yunho and Yeosang both give us some relaxed vocals in a higher range than you might expect from either of them. Seonghwa is back in the chorus for this one to demonstrate how insanely versatile his voice is. And Jongho shows us how his incredible voice can also be used for the lighter-feeling choruses. We do get much more Hongjoong and Mingi for this song too. Their verses are slower and more melodic, but definitely not somber. It feels more like their styles are coming through here and I always love hearing that. This one is just nice to listen to.

“Still Here”:

“Still Here” feels very much in the same vein as “The Letter”. It’s peppier, but slower and with a somber undertone that’s enveloped by a more hopeful message. This song is about feeling far apart, but still feeling the happiness of one another’s presence with the promise that they’ll always be there regardless of distance. This one is definitely about quarantine, and it’s a really touching message for ATINY. I love when San and Wooyoung pull out their higher, sweeter sound, and they definitely do that here. Which is also why it’s so fun to hear Seonghwa go a bit deeper in parts of this song. The range of ATEEZ, everyone. Yunho always manages to sound so comforting in these songs, which also makes it insane when he suddenly starts with something more powerful during parts of the chorus. Yeosang’s deeper vocals get more spotlight here once again, which I always love. Also, there’s tons of Hongjoong in this song. His style here is less melodic but even more addictive. There’s also a back and forth moment in here with him and Seonghwa that I could listen to over and over again. And Jongho tops it all off with the perfect ending to the chorus to make it feel satisfying. If only Mingi was in more than the outro of this song. It’s very likely only because he wasn’t present when they first started performing it.

“Better”:

This song’s message is more on par with “Turbulence”. It’s very much about struggles with anxiety and feeling like you’re being held in place when you want to move forward. However, the song is just as much about how you aren’t the only one experiencing those feelings and that all of us can come together and appreciate that we’re still improving day by day, even when we don’t feel like it. While Yeosang shows off his deeper range again, I was surprised by how neutral toned and sweet, Seonghwa, San, and Yunho all sounded together. Their voices all blended together nicely and there was the added appreciation of San not joining in on configurations like this all too often. Wooyoung’s belt was even a bit sweeter here, which I thought was a nice touch. And, as usual, Jongho kicks the chorus up a notch by ending it with even more of a belt. Hongjoong and Mingi sing in this song once again. Although I wish we had heard more rap verses on this album, I really love the consistency of Mingi’s deep voice and the unique sound Hongjoong has when he sings. It’s another slow piece, though it doesn’t really match a ballad or the peppiness of the other songs. Still, it’s very comforting.

“The Real” MV and ‘Kingdom’ Songs:

We’ve talked about the ‘Kingdom’ songs on this blog before while reviewing the competition show, so I won’t spend too much time on these songs. What I will say, though, it “The Real (Heung Version)” is even better than the original. The traditional sound matches the song so well! The music video for “The Real” also dropped with the release of this album. It’s definitely a stark contrast to the “Turbulence” video. This MV is extremely high energy, with a lot of really cool looks to discuss. The whole thing takes place in a high school where we see all of the members separated. Hongjoong and Seonghwa get the traditional outfitting, both in various shades of blue. Hongjoong’s newly dyed black and white hair pulled back is so incredible, meanwhile the pastel of Seonghwa’s hair is perfect against the white background. The confidence these two radiate when they’re together is extraordinary. Wooyoung and San sit in a class together, both wearing varsity jackets. It’s a laid back look, but it pairs well the well-fitted suits they rock later on in the MV. Yunho and Jongho sit astride motorcycles in leather jackets. Need I say more? This concept always works. All of the members change into school uniforms at some point in the video. Mingi wears the uniform most and it’s loose fitting look fits him very well. Yeosang, meanwhile, stands on a rooftop in a nice suit and pearls. This Is such a striking look that I understand why he needed all the time alone to show off. The dance battles that occur in this music video are the most entertaining part of the whole thing. It feels like the members are all having fun, and if you watch the behind the scenes clips, it’s because they were. As for the other songs “WAVE (Overture)”, “WONDERLAND (Symphony No.9)””, and “Answer (Ode to Joy)” are all perfectly epic for their performances on ‘Kingdom’. I seriously recommend looking those up if you haven’t.

And that’s it! This comeback surprised me more than I thought it would. When I heard “Turbulence” I wasn’t sure what to expect. I expected greatness, obviously, but making the center piece of this album a ballad was surprising for ATEEZ. But ATEEZ proved that they are more versatile than any of us expected by giving us a whole album of slower, emotional pieces. And there isn’t a single song on it that I would skip. Go check this out if you haven’t! ATEEZ is changing the game and you don’t want to miss it!

Don’t do anything fun until I get back!
